John 2

Let's begin our discussion of John chapter 2!

  1. Well, when I listened to John 2, what stuck out to me most was that Jesus' mom was so sure that he could fix the problem of no wine. It lead me to think that he did miracles at home before he started his "public" ministry.

Of course he first miracle took place in a setting I am not at all accustomed to, which is why I want to study the gospels to begin with. I want to model my life after Jesus, and apparently that means going to some parties!

  2. 1. There must be so much about this culture we do not understand. This is not a novel for sure. There are no explanations or expounding upon conversations. The dialogue between Mary and jesus seems odd. Almost as though they are talking at cross purposes.

    2. The water jars were used for cermonial washing. A religious activity. The law produces a lot of dirty water!

    3. This is the second instance of water being used in John. The first, of course, was the baptism of John. Actually, even the first part harkens back to Gen 1:1 where the Spirit of God hovers over the waters.

    4. Who is the “master of the banquet” and what relation is he to the groom?

    5. The disciples put their faith in Jesus because of this miracle. It seems that they might have fallen in and out of this.

    6. This is the “angry Jesus” part. Notice how he does not answer straightforwardly to the Jews when asked about his authority. He speaks in metaphors.

    7. Many people saw the signs and believed “in his name” (the disciples put their faith in HIM). Does believing in His name seem different somehow? How?

    8. Jesus, however, knew folk. He understood how humans are. And He didn’t get really close and cozy with just everyone. Even if they claimed to believe in Him.

    9. Jesus knew (and still does know) all people. He understands what motivates us, what’s inside of us. Our entire selves.

  3. Amber, I think what you said about Mary is very intriguing. Quite likely. Why the heck else would she say it?

    Love the thoughts on parties!
